Casino Royale

a001.jpgOn sunday I went to see Casino Royale which is a film that I’ve been wanting to see since I saw the first trailer for it. On seeing the trailer, I went from not being bothered about this Bond film to being desperate to see it.

Before the trailer I said that I didn’t think that Daniel Crag would make a good Bond and that if they go too far from the Bond formula it would be rubbish. Then I saw the trailer. It looked good, very good. Now normally if I’m really up for a film I try to stay away from the trailers - I can honestly say the I saw nothing, nothing, before I watched the Fellowship of the Ring and it was so much better for it. I had seen the trailer before I saw the film and to be honest I think I would have enjoyed it more had I not - on the other hand I probably wouldn’t have gone to see it had I not seen the trailer. Anyway to the film.

The film is good, a solid go, but I don’t think that it lived up to the hype - Ben will probably dissagree here. Don’t get me wrong Craig is the a better Bond the Brosnan - and I liked Brosnan - but I thought that they were going to go further with the back to roots Bond. I saw Layer Cake just before we watched Bond and I thought that he was brilliant in that but somewhere something was lost when he was Bond. I don’t think that they departed far enough from the bond formula, to me it was a bit too far from ‘Cheesy‘ Bond but not close enough to ‘Real‘ Bond. That said it’s the best fim I’ve seen for a while and the action in it is awesome, although I did feel like I was watching a trainer advert for a minute - you’ll see what I mean.

As ever we had the gadgets and the girls - not that Bond takes advantage of them as much in this film as usual. I was a bit disappointed by the cars, yes we had the Aston but that was pretty much it. Bond drives a Ford in some scenes! Plus I have got to listen to say what Doug Nagy has to say about the armour line on the audio edition. Charlotte enjoyed the film though which is a first for Bond, maybe that’s what they wanted.

Overall, 7.5/10

Spaced

s1dvd-cover-inner.jpg

On JB’s birthday/Andi’s Party weekend Abi and Nei lent us both seasons of Spaced. Now I’ve never really seen this series before but it made me laugh. We watched all the episodes in a few days, I couldn’t help thinking though that it would have been even funnier if I’d seen it at the time.

Some of the scenes are brilliant…

…this, is the good shit.

Bladerunner and films that you’re scared of watching

blade-runner.jpgOver the past few months I’ve really got into watching films, and not just watching them but actually paying attention to the directors and the actors in the film as well as being a bit critical once I’ve watched them. This is mainly due to Ian and the movieblog.

Now I don’t know if anyone else has any films like this but when I was little I saw Bladerunner. And for some reason it scared the shit out of me, all I could remember is the scene where Harrison Ford kills the snake women ‘Skin job’ - nicely stolen by BSG there, perhaps Adama remembered it from somewhere…?

That scene has been my only memory of this film for years and I’ve avoided watching it ever since. Now with my recent interest in films I wanted to put this irrational fear to bed and so I’ve been trying to get hold of Bladerunner with our DVD rentals, it finally came the other day. With me being ill I sat down to watch it as I was finding it hard to concentrate on Java code. Now it’s quite a good film but I have no idea why I’ve been avoiding it for so long, that scene is nothing, the freakiest thing is the little dude with the long nose!

Plus it has what most be the worst unicorn in the history of film, the horn wobbles on what must be the bluetack holding it in place. Perhaps this means that I should watch Predator and Robocop again now…

I suppose that this shows that the certificates for films are there for a good reason.

Car’s…

I finally got my car back today although it cost me nearly £400. That’s almost the most expensive MOT I’ve ever had! I had to have all the bushes on the suspension done - though it does make a difference to the handling of the car - there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with it. Sometimes I just feel like the garage is ripping me off, that’s the main reason I changed garages in the first place. Thankfully they do seem better than the last place, they actually kept the cost down to what they said and so I ended up getting some stuff done for free.

Now I love my car and I’m not sure that I could do without one but they are expensive to run. My insurance is £40 a month plus car tax £170, plus petrol - who knows how much that costs - plus MOTs, plus servicing and that’s without anything going wrong. I’ve often wondered what I’d be like if I hadn’t passed my driving test and sometimes I think that it would have done me good. I wouldn’t be so anti public transport for one thing and I’d probably be more relaxed - not that I’m really known for being stressed but it’s the one time that I get wound up over nothing really. My pet hates include;

  • Lanes that stop moving when you get in them.
  • People who drive sooo slowly that they stop me getting out in gaps that are big enough for two cars
  • People who don’t know where they are going.
  • People who cut me up.
  • People who travel at 40mph wherever they are from 60 limits to 20

I’m sure that there are more things that get under my skin during journey’s but they escape me at the moment of writing. Well I’m sure that everyone else has their pet hates whilst driving, some of them are probably me! I always say that I’m practicing before they’ll let me drive a BMW.

Andi’s Mum’s Birthday

Happy Birthday to Andi’s mum!

On the few occasions that I’ve met her she seemed really nice so I hope that she’s had a good birthday.
